The free all-day self-guided tour will feature seven stops at artist studios, a Paint-in-the-Dark class, a quilt display, and plein air painters capturing the day from a cliff above the Cumberland River.
At the first stop, 2269 Seven Mile Ferry Road, tour goers can pick up a map, visit with members of the Sew Simple Quilt Club and view some of their intricate work. Founded in 2006, quilt members enjoy sharing quilting goals and triumphs.
Artist Mariah Cox’s home studio will let visitors get a glimpse of how artists create in several media. Cox has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics from Austin Peay State University and has completed a number of recent colorful and whimsical chalk pastels, acrylic and mixed media pieces.
Alongside work by Cox, Jennifer Campbell will have acrylic-poured and abstract pieces for viewing and purchasing. Campbell likes to make functional art so that her pieces can be used, as well as appreciated.
Tour goers can stop by the home of Kris and Charlie Foust to watch and talk with plein air painters in action as they capture the magnificent views of the Cumberland River from this cliff-side property. Artists will have original oils, acrylics, and watercolors for sale as well.
Visitors can find handmade gifts for friends and family—or themselves—at Shipley Pottery, which offers pottery, handwoven clothing, chain maille jewelry, and metal works. Ken Shipley is a retired professor of art at Austin Peay. He has worked in ceramics for over 30 years. Melody Shipley’s work has been sold and exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally. She conducts workshops and teaches classes.
Leo Adames’s studio will feature works of various subject matter. There will be samplings of silkscreen prints, monoprints, still life, and landscape paintings. Formerly an art teacher for over 25 years, Adames enjoys contributing his talents to the Arts and Heritage Cultural Calendar and church celebrations.
Artist Tracy Bettencourt will have work to view and buy at the Central Civitan Building. She will also be teaching a mini Paint-in the-Dark Workshop from noon to 1 p.m. for a maximum of five people. Bettencourt is the owner/artist of Bettencourt Originals. Of her art, she says, “I am blind. I lost my eyesight over 17 years ago and within the past 10 years began painting using my hands. Every day I wake and live in darkness, yet with my newfound skill of painting.”
At Jim Diehr’s Longthunder Studio, tour goers can see panoramic paintings of lovely landscapes, smaller abstract paintings and whimsical sculptures.
Diehr has shown his paintings and sculpture locally, regionally, and nationally. In 2021-22, his works were exhibited in a one-man sculpture and painting show at Customs House Museum and Cultural Center. In 2018 the Tennessee Watercolor Society chose his work to be part of the statewide traveling tour, and a sculpture was juried into the Best of Tennessee Crafts Exhibit. His works are found in many private and corporate collections.

SOUTHSIDE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – When Richard Matheny left for a vacation in Ukraine, he wasn’t expecting to get married, or that it would take him 3 1/2 years to make it back to his home in Montgomery County.
An author and retired political science professor, Matheny decided to visit Ukraine in 2019. While there, he met Larissa and the two got married. But between troubles with the US embassy in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic and conflict with Russia, getting a visa for Larissa proved difficult.
“Once the pandemic hit, I was stuck,” Matheny told Clarksville Now. “I couldn’t get my wife out, and I couldn’t even help myself. So I stayed in my apartment, I built some furniture.”
While there, Matheny also wrote a book about Russian aggression towards Ukraine, the annexation of Crimea and the role of the U.S. in that conflict.
The Mathenys found an apartment in Brovary, about half an hour east of Kyiv, while waiting out the immigration process.
Then, in February, Russia invaded Ukraine. The Mathenys felt more stuck than ever.
“I’m not going to let the Russians kick my door down,” Matheny said. “I started stocking up on food, stocking up on water and bottled gas. … I was ready. I did everything, and thought I was stuck.”
He tried to volunteer for the Ukrainian military; but at 76 years old, he was encouraged to try to get out of the country.
Matheny said he was inspired by the bravery of the Ukrainian people and their readiness to defend against Russian aggression.
“These young men and women with no combat experience rose up in volunteer battalions, and they’re the ones that stopped the rebel advance and the Russian advance at great cost,” said a tearful Matheny. “The Ukrainian people are very courageous. They’re very brave. They’re building a democracy over there.”
With the help of Larissa’s son, currently serving in the Ukrainian reserves, Matheny’s brother, and Congressman Mark Green, the Mathenys were able to schedule a visa interview in Krakow, Poland.
The drive from Brovary to Krakow, which would normally take about 13 hours, took over 40 due to the number of Ukrainians trying to get out.
“They were fatalistic. What happens is going to happen,” Matheny said. “We loaded up the car with our luggage and left. It took us four hours to get through Kyiv. … The people trying to get out was panic. There were thousands of cars.”
After they arrived in Krakow, it took another three days for Larissa to receive her six month visa. From there, they flew to Amsterdam and then to Atlanta.
It was the first time Matheny had been on American soil in over three years.
The Mathenys are now settled at their home in Southside and are adjusting to life in the U.S.
Larissa told Clarksville Now she has been pleased by the warm welcome she has received from Tennesseans.
Matheny said they hope to eventually be able to spend their summers in Ukraine to be near Larissa’s family. In the meantime, they hope to do what they can to spread awareness of what is going on in Ukraine, and to encourage Americans to help where they can.
“(Ukraine) has been struggling for centuries for freedom,” said Matheny. “But there isn’t an Iron Curtain anymore, and they see what’s going on in the West.”

South Side will look to former Covington assistant coach Lester Narcisse to guide the Hawks football program. Narcisse takes over for Tyler Reeder, who resigned earlier this month after seven seasons at South Side.
Narcisse served as Covington's running back and linebackers coach for three seasons and helped guide the Chargers to a 11-3 record that included a Class 3A state semifinal appearance last fall. Covington reached the state quarterfinals in 2021.
“Coach Narcisse is a winner, and he knows what it takes to develop a program," Jackson-Madison County Schools deputy superintendent Ricky Catlett said. "He’s a defensive coach who has the traditional South Side mindset in terms of offense. He’ll coach character and toughness."
A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Narcisse has lived in west Tennessee since his time as a student at Lambuth University. He was an assistant coach at Munford in 2009 and served as defensive coordinator at Kirby from 2010-17.
"We’ve scrimmaged South Side many times over the last couple of years," Narcisse said. "I know the foundation is here. I can’t wait to mentor these young men and prepare them to reach the expectations of our coaching staff and the community."

Reeder's Hawks struggled through a 3-8 season in 2022 and lost to Pearl-Cohn in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs. South Side finished 31-36 during Reeder's six full seasons and 1-7 during his interim campaign in 2016. He was 3-3 against rival North Side from 2017-22 and guided the Hawks to six straight playoff appearances.
This fall both South Side and North Side will compete in Region 6-4A.
“The blueprint for building a winning culture is here," Narcisse said. "With buy-in from the players and the South Jackson and Denmark communities, the sky's the limit for what can be accomplished."
